Newspaper publishers adopt new Position Paper on Media Literacy

Share Print

BRUSSELS, 7 May 2009 - ENPA has this week finalised its latest position paper on media literacy.

This position paper was compiled by the ENPA Media Literacy Working Group established in May 2008. ENPA took the decision to set up its working group on media literacy and to bring together members from across Europe with the specific aim of raising the profile of European newspapers’ genuine dedication to media literacy goals amongst European policymakers.

The Media Literacy Working Group have developed this comprehensive position paper whilst carefully observing policy movements at the various European institutions and organisations. In the past year, we have seen an own-initiative report from the European Parliament, as well as continued reflection on media literacy by the European Commission which is expected to produce a draft Recommendation on media literacy later in 2009. The paper shoudl also serve as important material for Council of Europe and national policymakers who are also currently reflecting on this theme. The Council of Europe’s Ministerial Conference will take place in Reykjavik from 27 to 29 May, a meeting at which ENPA will be represented and should prove to be an important occasion to discuss media literacy’s contribution to society.
